"We fill the fresh tank right to the overflow and the gauge never goes past half."
It is one of the most common complaints owners post about their campers, and it is almost never the tank. It is the sender, the wiring to it, or a mismatch between the sender and the gauge it is wired to. All three are cheap to fix once you know which one you have.
Work through the checks below in order. They run from no-tools to some-tools, and each one eliminates a cause.
First, understand what your system actually is
RV tanks are measured one of two ways, and the fix is different for each.
A probe or float sender inside the tank. This is what a Black Series HQ camper uses, mounted through an SAE five-bolt flange in the top of the tank. It is a resistive device: its electrical resistance changes with level, and the gauge reads that resistance and converts it to a percentage.
External stick-on sensors bonded to the outside of the tank wall, common on many US-built travel trailers. These read through the plastic and are notorious for false readings from residue clinging to the inside wall.
If yours is the external type, the fault is usually residue rather than hardware, and a proper tank clean often restores the reading. The rest of this guide is about the internal sender type.
Cause 1: the sender is the wrong length for the tank
This is the single most common reason a gauge tops out at part-scale, and it is almost always introduced by a previous replacement.
A probe sender only measures over its own length. Fit a sender built for a nine-inch-deep tank into a fourteen-inch-deep tank and the float reaches the top of its travel while the tank keeps filling. The gauge will read hard against a ceiling that is not full, and the ceiling will often land near half.
The same error in the other direction, a sender too long for the tank, leaves the float fouling the tank floor so the gauge never reads truly empty and the bottom of the scale is compressed.
How to check. Pull the sender and measure it, then measure the internal depth of the tank. The sender's working length should match the tank depth closely. If the previous sender was a substitution rather than the factory part, this is very likely your fault.
Measure before you order a replacement. Sender length is the specification that matters most, and it is the one most often got wrong.
Cause 2: the sender and the gauge speak different languages
Resistive senders are built to several different standards, and a sender only reads correctly on a gauge built for the same range. Mix them and you get a gauge that works but reads wrong across the whole scale, frequently topping out around the middle.
There is more than one common standard in circulation, and they are not interchangeable. Before buying either a sender or a gauge, confirm the resistance range of the part you are keeping and match the new part to it. If you are replacing both at once, buy them as a matched pair and the problem disappears.
If your gauge reads backwards — full when empty, empty when full — that is the same class of fault. The sender's resistance is running the opposite direction to what the gauge expects.

Cause 3: a bad ground
A resistive sender needs a solid ground return, and the gauge measures resistance through that whole path. Corrosion anywhere in it adds resistance the gauge cannot distinguish from a change in water level, so a corroded ground reads as a permanently lower tank.
Tank senders sit in the wettest part of the camper, which is exactly where grounds corrode.
How to check. Find the sender's ground connection and inspect it. Look for green or white powder, a loose ring terminal, or a screw into a painted or corroded surface. Clean the terminal back to bright metal, refit it to bare metal, and protect it with dielectric grease.
On a camper that has seen dust and water ingress, check the ground at the gauge panel too.
Cause 4: fouling on the probe
Fresh tanks build biofilm and mineral scale. Waste tanks build very much worse. Either coats the probe and changes what it reads.
This is the usual cause when a gauge that used to be accurate has drifted over a season or two, and it is far more common on black and gray tanks than on fresh.
How to check. Pull the sender and look at it. Scale, film or debris on the probe or float is your answer. Clean it, or replace it if it is pitted. Then clean the tank itself, because the sender will just foul again in a tank that is dirty.
Cause 5: a stuck float
Float-type senders have one moving part and it can jam, on debris, on a burr in the tank, or after the arm has been bent by an overlong sender or careless installation.
A gauge frozen at exactly one reading, never moving at all through a fill and a drain, points here rather than at anything electrical.
How to check. With the sender out, move the float through its full travel by hand. It should sweep smoothly with no catching.
Cause 6: the wiring between sender and gauge
Less common than the faults above, but worth ruling out before buying parts.
- A chafed wire grounding against the chassis reads as a permanent full or permanent empty depending on the system.
- A broken wire or a backed-out connector pin usually reads hard empty rather than half.
- Corroded connector pins behave exactly like a corroded ground, and add resistance that reads as a low tank.
Check the run end to end, paying attention to anywhere it passes through a panel or crosses the chassis. Grommets missing at pass-throughs are a known build issue on some off-road campers, and a wire that has been rubbing on a sharp edge for two seasons is worth finding before it fails completely.
Cause 7: the gauge itself
Least likely, so check it last.
If the sender measures correctly through its full travel with a multimeter, the ground is clean and the wiring is sound, and the gauge still refuses to move past a ceiling, the gauge has failed. A digital LED tank level gauge reading in percentage is a straightforward panel replacement and easier to read at a glance than the four-light bar it usually replaces.
The fastest route to an answer
If you want to skip straight to the most likely cause on a Black Series HQ camper:
- Pull the sender. One flange, five bolts, and you can see almost everything at once.
- Look at the probe or float for fouling and free movement. That is causes 4 and 5, settled in a minute.
- Measure the sender against the tank depth. That is cause 1, the most common of all.
- Clean the ground terminal while you have access. That is cause 3, and it costs nothing to do while you are there.
Between them those four checks account for the large majority of gauges that read half a tank when the tank is full.
Replacing the sender
The SAE five-bolt flange tank level sender is the direct factory replacement for Black Series HQ-series campers and fits most tanks using the common five-hole pattern. It is stainless steel, which matters in a tank that stays wet.
Fitting notes:
- Measure the old sender and your tank depth before ordering. Length is the specification that decides whether the new one reads correctly.
- Replace the flange gasket, and do not rely on sealant to make up for a tired one. A fresh tank leaking into the floor is a much bigger problem than a gauge reading half.
- Tighten the five bolts evenly, working across the pattern rather than around it, and do not overtighten into a plastic tank.
- Test before you close the access panel. Fill, watch the gauge move through its range, and confirm the reading tracks the actual level.
