The Renogy DC-DC On-Board Battery Charger with MPPT charges a house battery two ways at once: from the starter battery through the vehicle alternator, and from solar panels wired straight into the unit. That dual input is what makes it a standard piece in a van, truck camper or overland build that charges while driving and again while parked.

Specifications

  • System voltage: 12V
  • Charge current: 30A or 50A depending on option
  • Inputs: alternator and solar, usable at the same time
  • MPPT tracking efficiency: up to 99%; conversion efficiency 94%
  • Charging example: Renogy rates it to fully charge a 1kWh battery within 2 hours from solar
  • Monitoring: Modbus protocol, compatible with the RMS-DCDC screen, the DC Home app and Renogy ONE
  • Design: soft start circuit, removable side covers, all-in-one negative terminal with partition design
  • Certification: CE, FCC and RoHS
  • Weight: 4.5 lb to 7.56 lb depending on option

Protections cover battery isolation, overvoltage, battery temperature, overcurrent, overheat, reverse current and reverse polarity on both the solar and alternator sides. These are genuine Renogy products and they ship from Upland in 3–7 days.

Not sure what size system you need? Our RV solar and battery calculator sizes the array, battery bank and inverter from what you actually run, then builds a matching Renogy parts list you can add to your cart in one click.

What size, and what you also need

  • Which size: Renogy pairs the 30A with a 45–60A alternator and the 50A with a 75–100A alternator. Solar input is up to 400W (30A) or 660W (50A).
  • Fusing: Renogy's manual lists a 40A/60A output fuse in the box and a 45–60A / 75–100A fuse at the starter battery.
  • Cable: the 50A wants 8 AWG to 10 ft, 6 AWG to 20 ft and 4 AWG to 30 ft.
  • You also need: the IGN wire connected for smart alternators.

Honestly, I have not yet installed mine, though it came well packaged and arrived rather fast. I have been using Renogy products for several years now. It seems that as technology grows and new things become available... so does my system. I'm about to redo my current system and put my dual charger to use when I do. As well as my new Renogy 3000 watt inverter. I can not speak more highly of this company. Great products, great service. I expect to be Renogy Empowered for many years to come.

I bought it because of reviews and will prouder. But a day after I purchased it I realized that I needed the 50Amp So I could eventually upgrade my system so that’s what I’m gonna purchase now.

Great charger with a fatal flaw. This charger is great but has a flaw that makes it unusable specifically if you are using it on a vehicle with a smart alternator and not using a solar panel. The charging logic makes sense for a traditional alternator: start charging at 13v and stop at 12.7v but for a smart alternator vehicle the charging logic is nonsensical. Since a smart alternator can charge the vehicle battery at a range of voltages from 12v-14v it cannot have a 12.7v cutoff. So Renogy came up with the perfect solution by adding an ignition wire to sense when the vehicle is on but the flaw is that they do not use the ignition wire to sense when the vehicle is off but rather rely upon a ridiculous cut off voltage of 11.5v which is deader than dead for the vehicle/starter battery. After purchasing this charger I inquired about this charging logic assuming I was misunderstanding or had wired something wrong but I was told that this is normal. I assume this is not a problem for a lot of people because most will use this in hybrid mode with a solar panel, however if you use it just with a battery I cannot recommend this product until this flaw is fixed. My solution right now is to run it in traditional alternator mode so that the voltage cutoff will be 12.7v and not kill my battery however this will not allow the battery to charge when the smart alternator drops below that threshold which is annoying. Renogy has stated they will fix this issue in a firmware update but I am very disappointed to say the least.

I had the Adventurer solar controller. changed it out for the new MPPTT. The change out went pretty simple. However, I thought I would be smart and use the sensor wires from the adventurer. I made a mistake and plugged in one of them upside down and I heard a load pop. Afterwards it stopped working. My one suggestion is the plugs for the sensors should be made where my mistake was not possible. negative could be square and Positive could be oval. Also, is there a system that would allow me to have three battery banks?

This is my second unit, still using the first one bought it in 2013. My frist unit was already tapped out and needed more solar panels for charing for off grid boondocking. The new unit works very well with the older unit, wired in parallel.

I purchased this charger when I moved to a LiFePO4 battery and found out that I needed a DC-DC charger to protect my truck's alternator. The installation was simple until I got to the instructions for connecting the alternator. They were unclear so I turned to tech support. I used the IA chat and was disappointed to find that I needed to run a new wire from my truck's ignition switch to the new charger. This was certainly not clear in the instructions and was a challenge I hadn't anticipated. Since the camper is currently in storage for the winter I haven't had the chance to try it out yet but things seems to be ready to go and I am now ready to add solar in the future.

Seems to work well for my truck camper top with 200W of solar panels to charge a house battery for refrigerator and A/C usage. A nice feature is that the unit will also charge the starter battery.
