The DEFCON EMP Alert System plugs into any standard 120 V outlet and watches both the power line and the ambient air for the signature of an electromagnetic pulse or a solar coronal mass ejection. A high-speed circuit catches E1/E2 disturbances as brief as nanoseconds; a second circuit monitors the line for the E3 over- and under-voltage that follows.
Three distinct alarms tell you which it saw: a short beep for an E1/E2 pulse, a long tone for E3 overvoltage and a pulsing beep for E3 undervoltage, with red lights on any detection, so you have time to open the main breaker. It draws under 50 mA, about the same as a 5 W nightlight.
