How do I add a wireless backup camera to a horse or cargo trailer that isn't pre-wired?

Short answer: Choose by where the camera gets its power. A rear indicator light camera mounts where the trailer already has 12V. A magnet camera (65 lb magnet) runs on the VWMOBAT battery pack for 6-8 hours a charge. On a semi trailer, the VWTLADP taps the running lights. All pair with any Visionworks HD wireless monitor, which shows up to four cameras.

Camping trailers often come with a Furrion-style camera pre-wire. Horse, stock and cargo trailers usually don't. A wireless camera still needs power at the back of the trailer, so the choice comes down to where that power comes from.

Three ways to power it

Power source Visionworks part Best for
The trailer's existing 12V at a rear light Rear indicator light camera: VWIC714-RILHDWL kit (7"), or VWCAMRIL-HDWL camera alone A permanent install with no new wiring run
No wiring at all Magnet camera kit (VWIC514-HDWL 5" or VWIC114-HDWL 10", 65 lb magnet) + VWMOBAT battery pack Moving one camera between trailers, or occasional use
A semi trailer's running lights VWTLADP truck light adapter Semi trailers. It fits the 12V connection used on most semi trailer running lights

How long the battery lasts: the VWMOBAT gives 6 to 8 hours per charge. It comes with an AC/DC charger, a 12V charger and a magnet. That's plenty for a day's drive, but recharge it every night on a long haul.

Horse trailers: one monitor for inside and behind

Visionworks makes horse-trailer systems on the same 7" monitor:

  • VWIC714-HTV2WL: an interior camera and an exterior backup camera on one monitor, so you can check the horses and then switch to the rear view to back up.
  • VWIC714-HDWL: the interior camera system on its own.

Both have real-time video at 60 fps and night vision to 35+ ft, which matters for checking stock after dark.

Things to know before you buy

  • Four cameras per monitor. Every Visionworks HD monitor shows and records up to four cameras. You can add side marker light cameras or a license plate camera later.
  • Range. Visionworks quotes 1,000+ ft with good line of sight. A long, solid-walled horse trailer puts metal between the camera and the cab, so mount the camera high and centered.
  • Not compatible: the long-range VWCAMAIO1-HDWL camera doesn't work with Visionworks MACH2 systems or non-HD monitors. Stay within the HD (-HDWL) line.
  • Newer truck flicker: if a light-powered camera drops out behind a 2019+ GM or 2021+ Ford or Dodge truck, the VW7PMA 7-way adapter gives the trailer a steady 12V.
