LiTime 36V vs 48V for Golf Carts and Trolling Motors

Choosing a LiTime 36V or 48V lithium pack for a golf cart, trolling motor or electric outboard: matching voltage, sizing amp-hours, three 12V batteries in series vs one pack, parallel-only limits, and chargers.

LiTime 36V 45Ah GC2 Bluetooth LiFePO4 Golf Cart & Trolling Battery

Golf carts, larger trolling motors and electric outboards often run on 36V or 48V. LiTime makes lithium packs for both voltages, and the choice comes down to three things: the voltage your motor needs, how much energy (Ah) you want on board, and whether to build that voltage from 12V batteries in series or buy one higher-voltage pack. Every spec comes from the listing on our site or LiTime's own product page, and LiTime's range and mileage numbers are LiTime's claims, not ours.

Step 1: match the voltage

Read the label on the cart, motor or controller. Lithium packs are named by their nominal class: a "36V" LiTime pack is 38.4V nominal and a "48V" pack is 51.2V nominal.

  • 36V golf carts: LiTime says one of its 36V 100Ah packs replaces six 6V 210Ah lead-acid batteries.
  • 48V golf carts: LiTime says its 48V 100Ah replaces eight 6V or six 8V lead-acid batteries.
  • Trolling motors follow LiTime's thrust table: 30 to 70 lb thrust is usually 12V, 70 to 100 lb is 24V, and 100 to 120 lb is 36V. More on that in how many LiTime trolling motor batteries for your thrust.
  • Electric outboards: LiTime's OBM batteries are built for 24V to 72V motors. Follow the motor maker's battery spec.

Step 2: pick the pack

How much Ah?

Energy is volts times amp-hours: 38.4V x 100Ah = 3,840Wh. Two things decide the size you need:

  • Continuous current. The pack's continuous rating should cover what your cart controller or motor draws at full throttle. LiTime's 48V packs range from 60A to 300A continuous.
  • Runtime. Divide amp-hours by your average draw. For example, if your trolling motor averages 25A at your usual speed (measure it with a battery monitor), a 36V 50Ah lasts about 2 hours and a 36V 100Ah about 4. The 25A is only an example, not a spec.

Need more range from a cart? Add identical packs in parallel up to LiTime's limit, rather than buying a higher-voltage pack.

Step 3: series 12V batteries or one higher-voltage pack?

You can reach 36V with three LiTime 12V 100Ah batteries in series. Three 12V 100Ah TM Bluetooth batteries hold 3 x 1,280Wh = 3,840Wh, the same as one 36V 100Ah.

Three 12V in series One 36V or 48V pack
Wiring Series jumpers between batteries One positive, one negative
Balance Batteries can drift apart; a balancer helps One BMS manages the whole pack
Charging A multi-bank charger, one bank per battery One charger at the pack's voltage
Handling Several smaller batteries to lift and place One heavier battery, one footprint
Reuse The 12V batteries can be split up later for 12V or 24V use Stays a 36V or 48V battery

If you go the series route, use identical batteries of the same age and charge each one full before wiring them together. The LiTime 48V battery balancer works on 24V, 36V and 48V banks of 12V batteries and starts balancing when they differ by more than 10mV.

One rule people miss: most LiTime 36V and 48V packs are meant for parallel only. LiTime lists them as 4P1S, 6P1S, 8P1S or 16P1S, and its 36V 45Ah page says outright not to connect it in series. The exception for higher voltages is the 36V 100Ah OBM (up to 2S4P) for 72V outboards. More detail in LiTime batteries in parallel or series.

Step 4: the charger

36V packs

LiTime's spec tables list a 43.2V ± 0.6V charge voltage for its 36V 100Ah and 36V 50Ah TM Bluetooth. The LiTime 36V (43.8V) 15A charger is the one LiTime pairs with its 36V 45Ah and 50Ah batteries. It's IP66, runs on 100 to 240V AC, and can wake a battery its BMS has shut off. Rough charge time is amp-hours divided by charger amps: about 3½ hours for 50Ah and about 7 for 100Ah, with the last few percent taking longer. LiTime quotes about 4 hours from empty to full on the 36V 100Ah with its 25A charger.

For a boat with a permanently mounted charger, the DualPRO Eagle HF ES800 36V delivers 22A, with the lithium profile selected in DualPRO's app. Confirm its lithium voltage against LiTime's figure before you charge.

48V packs

LiTime's spec tables list 57.6V ± 0.8V for its 48V 30Ah, 60Ah, 100Ah and 150Ah golf-cart packs, and LiTime recommends its own 58.4V chargers (10A for the 30Ah GC2 Bluetooth, 18A for the 100Ah and 150Ah). We carry two 48V LiFePO4 chargers: the Rich Solar 48V (57.6V) 20A or 25A, and the DualPRO Eagle HF ES800 48V at 17A. Stay within the pack's recommended charge current: LiTime lists 6A recommended and 30A maximum for the 48V 30Ah models, 12A recommended for the 48V 60Ah, 20A for the 48V 100Ah, and 30A for the 150Ah.

Three or four 12V batteries in series

Charge each battery on its own bank. The DualPRO SS3HF has three 10A banks, each with a selectable lithium setting, and DualPRO makes 4-bank versions for 48V. See charging lithium trolling motor batteries with DualPRO.

Cold weather and first use

On the LiTime packs whose spec tables we checked, charging stops below 32°F and resumes at 41°F, and discharging stops below -4°F. You can run the motor on a cold morning, but charge somewhere above freezing. A new LiTime battery may need a charger connected before it switches on; see why a new LiTime battery won't turn on.

Golf cart extras

  • Measure the tray. The GC2-size packs (10.24 x 7.09 in footprint) fit where GC2 lead-acid batteries sat. The 100Ah and 150Ah packs are single large boxes.
  • 12V accessories. A 48V lithium pack sits at a higher voltage than lead-acid, which can kill an old 48V-to-12V reducer. Read 48V to 12V converters after a golf cart lithium swap.
  • Monitoring. Most of these packs have Bluetooth. The 48V 30Ah and 60Ah ComFlex packs use CAN and RS485, and the 48V 150Ah also shares its data with Victron displays.

FAQ

Can I wire two 36V LiTime batteries in series for 72V?

Only the 36V 100Ah OBM, which LiTime rates for up to 2S4P. LiTime lists the other 36V packs we carry for parallel connection only.

Can I use one LiTime 48V battery to replace all the batteries in my cart?

Yes, that's how they're designed. LiTime says the 48V 100Ah replaces eight 6V or six 8V lead-acid batteries. Add identical packs in parallel for more range.

Will my old lead-acid charger work?

Use a charger with a LiFePO4 profile at the pack's voltage. LiTime's charge voltages are 43.2V ± 0.6V (36V) and 57.6V ± 0.8V (48V).

How much weight does a 36V lithium pack save?

Against lead-acid, LiTime says its 36V 100Ah OBM is 67% lighter than three Group 31 12V 100Ah lead-acid batteries. Against three lithium 12V batteries, the bigger differences are wiring, balancing and charging, covered in Step 3.
