OutEquipPro Summit 2 12V vs 24V vs 48V: Which to Buy

How the 12V, 24V and 48V versions of the OutEquipPro Summit 2 differ in current draw, cable, fuse and cooling output, and how to choose.

The OutEquipPro Summit 2 is the same low-profile rooftop air conditioner in three electrical versions: 12V, 24V and 48V DC. The housing, roof opening, airflow and noise figures are identical; what changes is the current it draws, the cable and fuse it comes with, and a little cooling output. The right choice is almost always the voltage of the battery bank it will run from. Here is how the three compare on OutEquipPro's published figures.

Match the air conditioner to your house battery

The Summit 2 runs straight from a DC battery bank, with no inverter in between. OutEquipPro's matched kits pair a 12V air conditioner with a 12V battery and a 48V air conditioner with a 48V battery, and its installation guide warns against connecting the unit to an unsupported power source. So start with the bank you have, or the one you plan to build:

Rebuilding a whole electrical system around an air conditioner rarely makes sense; choosing the air conditioner to suit the system does.

Current draw by mode

Mode 12V 24V 48V
Turbo 58 A 35 A 18 A
Eco 21 A 17 A 9 A
Sleep 21 A 15 A 7 A
Fan only 4.5 A 2.5 A 1.2 A
Heating (heater models) 50 A 26 A 12 A
Standby 1 W 1 W 1 W

Source: OutEquipPro's Summit 2 specifications.

A higher system voltage moves the same power with less current, which is why the 48V model's Turbo draw is under a third of the 12V model's. Less current means thinner cable for the same run, less voltage drop and less heat at the connections.

Cable and fuse

12V 24V 48V
Power cord gauge 6 AWG 8 AWG 8 AWG
Pre-installed inline fuse 100 A 80 A 50 A

The cord (OutEquipPro's spec sheet lists 14 feet) comes with the inline fuse fitted. If your battery is farther away than that, size any extension for the current and the length, and follow NFPA 70 and NFPA 1192, the codes the Summit 2 installation guide cites for US installations.

Cooling and heating output

OutEquipPro rates the 12V Summit 2 at 10,000 BTU and the 24V and 48V versions at 11,000 BTU. The optional PTC heater is 4,500 BTU on all three. Airflow (450 m³/h), sound (53/48/40 dB), set range (63–86°F), size (28.3 x 28.3 x 6.3 inches) and the roof opening are the same across the range.

Runtime: what voltage changes and what it doesn't

Runtime depends on how much energy the battery stores, not on its voltage: a 12V 460Ah bank and a 48V 115Ah bank hold the same energy. What voltage changes is the current through your cables and BMS. Two worked examples from OutEquipPro's figures, assuming 90% of a LiFePO4 battery's rated capacity is usable and a constant draw at the rated current:

  • 12V Summit 2 on a 12V 460Ah battery: 414 usable Ah ÷ 58 A ≈ 7.1 hours in Turbo, or ÷ 21 A ≈ 19.7 hours in Eco.
  • 48V Summit 2 on the 48V 105Ah battery: 94.5 usable Ah ÷ 18 A ≈ 5.3 hours in Turbo, ÷ 9 A ≈ 10.5 hours in Eco, or ÷ 7 A ≈ 13.5 hours in Sleep.

OutEquipPro's own estimate for that 48V pair is about 5 to 6 hours in Turbo, 11 to 12 hours in Eco and about 15 hours in Sleep. Real runtime depends on insulation, sun, outside temperature and your set point; the variable-speed compressor slows down once the cabin is cool. More tables: how much battery an OutEquipPro 12V AC needs.

Which versions we stock

We carry the 12V Summit 2 in white or black, with or without the heater (white with heater, white cooling only, black with heater, black cooling only); the 24V in white with heater, white cooling only and black with heater; and the 48V in white with heater.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run a 12V Summit 2 from a 24V bank, or the other way round?

No. Buy the version that matches the bank. OutEquipPro's guide warns that connecting the unit to an unsupported power source can cause permanent damage.

Does the 48V version cool better?

OutEquipPro rates it at 11,000 BTU against 10,000 BTU for the 12V, and it draws far less current. How long it runs still comes down to how much energy your battery stores.

Do the 24V and 48V versions fit the same roof opening?

Yes. All three share the same housing, the 14.1 x 14.1 inch standard opening and the 1.5 to 3.5 inch roof thickness range. See installing a Summit 2 in a 14x14 roof vent opening.

Do you sell a 24V battery for the 24V model?

We don't stock an OutEquipPro 24V battery. Ask us and we will help you size a 24V bank for it.

Every OutEquipPro unit we sell ships from our warehouse in Upland, California, to the lower 48 states. Not sure which one fits your roof or battery bank? Send us your roof opening, roof thickness and battery size before you order and we will help you choose. Browse the full OutEquipPro range.
