Your RV already has a fridge, but it is rarely big enough for a long weekend with drinks, and it is inside. Sooner or later most RV owners add a second cold box outside: either a high-performance rotomolded cooler that runs on ice, or a 12V compressor fridge that runs on battery power. Both work. They suit different trips, and this guide helps you choose.
The short answer
- Choose a rotomolded cooler if you want something that needs no power at all, takes rough handling, doubles as a seat, and you can get ice every few days.
- Choose a 12V fridge if you boondock for long stretches away from ice, want to freeze food, or hate soggy food in meltwater, and you have the battery and solar to run it.
- Many RVers end up with both: a fridge for food, a cooler for drinks that get opened all day.
How a rotomolded cooler keeps things cold
A rotomolded cooler is a thick, insulated box with a tight seal. It does not make cold; it keeps ice from melting for as long as it can. Engel's high-performance rotomolded coolers, for example, use a seamless rotomolded shell, 2 inches of closed-cell foam in the lid, walls and floor, and an all-silicone gasket. Engel rates the Engel 25 at up to 8 days of ice retention and the 35 through 320 at up to 10 days. Those are "up to" figures; real life depends on sun, how full the cooler is and how often it is opened.
What you get in exchange for buying ice:
- No power draw. Nothing to wire, nothing to drain your batteries, nothing to fail.
- Toughness. Engel's rotomolded coolers are IGBC certified bear resistant and carry a 10-year Engel warranty.
- Dry ice compatible, per Engel, for longer trips.
- Accessories that make it furniture: Engel's marine-grade seat cushion turns the lid into a seat, SeaDek toppers add a non-slip pad, and Engel's cooler slides fit the 35, 65 and 80 for a truck bed or storage bay.
The trade-offs: you have to buy ice and drain meltwater, food can end up wet, and you cannot keep food frozen for long.
How a 12V fridge keeps things cold
A 12V compressor fridge is a small refrigerator that runs from your house battery, a power station or a vehicle's 12V supply. It holds a set temperature as long as it has power, and many can run as a freezer. The ICECO fridges we carry, for example, run from a 12V battery or power station, many also plug into AC, and the chest and upright models can keep food frozen. Electric coolers like the Anker SOLIX EverFrost 2 carry their own removable battery.
What you get:
- No ice. No melt, no draining, no trips to the store for bags of ice.
- Freezing. Frozen meat or ice cream on a long trip.
- Any trip length, as long as you can keep the battery charged.
The trade-offs: it needs a power budget. Compressor fridges cycle on and off, so the average draw is below the rated draw, but it still adds up over days. Before you buy, add the fridge to our RV solar and battery calculator and check that your battery and solar can carry it. A fridge also has electronics and a compressor, which a cooler does not.

Which fits your kind of trip
Campgrounds with a store nearby
A rotomolded cooler is simple and dependable. Ice is easy to get, and you never have to think about power. A mid-size Engel such as the Engel 50 or Engel 65 covers drinks and extra food next to the RV fridge.
Long boondocking stays
If you are off-grid for a week or more and far from ice, a 12V fridge usually wins, provided your solar keeps up. See the ICECO 12V fridge buying guide to pick a size and zone layout.
Bear country
Many parks and campgrounds have food-storage rules. Engel's rotomolded coolers are IGBC certified bear-resistant containers, which is a strong argument for a hard cooler outside. Check the local rules, which may also require locks.
Fishing and hunting
A big rotomolded cooler handles a catch or game without power and takes a beating on a boat or in a truck bed. For that, we suggest one of Engel's larger sizes, from the Engel 123 up.
Sizing the cooler
If you decide on a cooler, our Engel rotomolded cooler size guide walks through all eleven sizes and which accessories fit each one. For days away from the rig, see the Engel soft cooler guide.
FAQ
Can I use a rotomolded cooler and a 12V fridge together?
Yes, and many RVers do: food in the fridge, drinks in the cooler, so the fridge is opened less often.
Does a rotomolded cooler need any power?
No. It keeps ice cold with insulation and a tight seal.
