Which MaxxAir Vent Cover Fits My Fan or Vent?

Matches each MaxxAir cover (FanMate, MaxxAir II, MaxxAir I+) to the fan or vent it fits, with MaxxAir's install rules, and explains the UniMaxx lid and MaxxShade.

MaxxAir makes three rain covers that sit over a 14 in x 14 in roof vent or fan, plus a replacement lid and an interior shade that are easy to confuse with them. Which cover fits depends on one question: is there a high-powered fan under it? This guide sorts each MaxxAir cover by what it goes over, using MaxxAir's installation sheets, FAQ and 2025 catalog.

Match the cover to what's on your roof

What's on the roof MaxxAir cover How it mounts
MaxxFan or MaxxFan Plus FanMate Tool-free: it sits over the fan's molded, waterproof mounting tabs and locks with EZClip pins
MaxxFan Pivot FanMate MaxxAir says the Pivot has integrated mounting tabs for FanMate covers
MaxxFan Deluxe None needed The Deluxe has its rain shield built in
Fan-Tastic or another brand's high-powered fan FanMate Brackets and clips included; MaxxAir says it was designed to mount on Fan-Tastic and other plastic fan housings
High-powered fan, but little roof space around it MaxxAir II MaxxAir's FAQ calls it "an acceptable alternative"; the FanMate restricts airflow less
Low-powered fan MaxxAir II Brackets to the fan's side walls
Plain (non-powered) 14 x 14 vent MaxxAir I+ or MaxxAir II Brackets to the vent frame

MaxxAir's sheet for its original cover says plainly that it is not recommended for high-powered fans like the MaxxFan, MaxxFan Plus, ShurFlo or Fan-Tastic, and its FAQ explains why: the standard cover was designed for a roof vent or small bathroom fan and restricts a high-powered fan's airflow. That is the job the FanMate was made for.

Installing a cover: what MaxxAir's sheets say

  • Louvers face the rear of the RV on all three covers.
  • No holes in the roof. MaxxAir says all its covers install without drilling into the roof. They bolt to the vent frame or fan housing with aluminum brackets.
  • FanMate on a MaxxFan or Plus: place it over the four tabs and slide in the EZClip pins. On an older MaxxFan without tabs, remove the plastic plugs from the fan's side walls and fasten the brackets into the pre-drilled holes with the #6 x 1/2 in screws provided.
  • Over another brand's fan: the brackets attach to the fan's side wall with self-tapping screws. MaxxAir's MaxxAir II sheet warns not to drill more than 1/2 in deep so you don't hit internal wiring.
  • Leave the gap. A properly installed cover sits 1/2 in to 1 in above the roof. MaxxAir says the gap lets condensation and wind-blown rain escape instead of pooling on your vent seal. Do not caulk it.
  • Tools: MaxxAir lists a drill with 3/16 in and 3/32 in bits, a Phillips screwdriver, an adjustable or 11/32 in wrench and a pencil.

"My fan lid won't open all the way under the cover"

That's expected. MaxxAir's FAQ says all its vent covers are about the same height, the electric lids on high-powered fans have current-sensing circuits that stop the lift motor when they meet an obstruction, and in MaxxAir's testing the fan reaches maximum airflow once the lid is about 50% open. MaxxAir says it is safe to put a vent cover on any style of high-powered fan, and that driving with the fan lid open under a properly installed FanMate does no harm.

Not a cover: UniMaxx lid and MaxxShade

UniMaxx (white 00-335001, smoke 00-335002) is a universal replacement lid for a plain roof vent whose lid has cracked. MaxxAir says it replaces damaged lids on Elixir, Heng's, Jensen, Ventline and other roof vent assemblies, so you don't need to know who made your vent or when. It has no rain cover of its own. If your vent already has a cover, MaxxAir's instructions say the cover's brackets may need to go over the UniMaxx hinge flanges, and any unused holes should be sealed. Our plain-vent refresh kit pairs a new lid with a rain cover and a shade.

MaxxShade (00-03900) and MaxxShade Plus with LED lighting (00-03901) are interior roller shades. MaxxAir says they mount over the MaxxFan garnish ring, and over other brands' fans by drilling the garnish ring for the adapter. MaxxAir warns not to run the fan with the shade closed, because the fan may overheat. The LED version needs a 12 V DC, 2 A fused circuit.

FAQ

Do I need a cover on a MaxxFan Deluxe?

No. MaxxAir sells the Deluxe as vent, fan and rain cover in one unit. If there isn't room behind your vent for the Deluxe's hood (MaxxAir asks for 8 in), MaxxAir recommends a MaxxFan or Plus with a FanMate instead. See MaxxFan Deluxe vs Plus vs standard.

Can I put a MaxxAir II over my Fan-Tastic fan?

MaxxAir's FAQ says it can safely be installed over a high-powered fan such as a MaxxFan or Fan-Tastic, but the FanMate is the recommended cover for high-powered fans because it restricts airflow less.

How do I clean under a cover?

MaxxAir says you have to go on the roof. The FanMate and MaxxAir II have hinged hardware so they open for cleaning; the standard MaxxAir cover comes off by removing four nuts.

Will a cover let me leave the vent open in the rain?

That is what they're for. Our answer on leaving a roof vent fan open in the rain covers each setup. Shop every cover in our MaxxAir collection; found one cheaper elsewhere? We'll beat it.
