Visionworks 5" vs 7" vs 10" Camera Monitor: Which Size?

The Gen2 kits share one camera and feature list; only the screen changes. How to choose 5, 7 or 10 inches by camera count, quad-view picture size and where the monitor will sit.

The Visionworks wireless RV camera systems we carry come with a 5", 7" or 10" touchscreen monitor. Within the Gen2 RV kits, the camera, range, night vision and recording are the same in every size. The screen is the only difference. That makes the choice easier than it looks: count the cameras you will run, decide where the monitor will sit, and the size picks itself. This guide covers both the Gen2 kits for camera-ready RVs and the magnet-camera systems for trailers with no pre-wire.

The short answer

  • 5": one rear camera, a small cab, or you want the monitor in a cup holder and out of the windshield. Gen2 5" kit or 5" magnet camera system.
  • 7": a rear camera plus one or two more, viewed in tri-view. It's also the only size for Visionworks' horse trailer and rear indicator light systems. Gen2 7" kit.
  • 10": you plan on three or four cameras and want each one large enough to read at a glance. Gen2 10" kit or 10" magnet camera system.

What is the same in every Gen2 kit

The three Gen2 RV kits (VWIC514G2-HDWLRV, VWIC714G2-HDWLRV and VWIC114G2-HDWLRV) share the same feature list on Visionworks' flyer and our listings:

  • 1080p HD camera with no-delay, real-time video at 60 fps
  • Touchscreen monitor with tri-view and quad-view
  • Built-in DVR that records up to four cameras. The SD card (up to 256GB) isn't included
  • Wireless range of 1,000+ ft with good line of sight
  • Night vision to 35+ ft in complete darkness
  • A heavy-duty camera: IP69K on Visionworks' flyer, IP68 on its Gen2 camera product page
  • Mounting bracket and power adapter for RVs pre-wired for a Furrion camera
  • A 3-year camera warranty from Visionworks

So a 5" kit doesn't get a lesser camera. If you're happy with one rear view, a smaller screen gives up very little.

Every size at a glance

7" VWIC714G2-HDWLRV None Rear indicator light, horse trailer interior, horse trailer interior and exterior VW7M1-HDWL

Step 1: count your cameras

Every Visionworks HD monitor shows and records up to four cameras. You can toggle between them full screen or split the screen. The Gen2 monitors add a tri-view for three cameras.

Split views are where screen size matters. In quad view each camera gets one quarter of the screen: half the width and half the height. Each image is then roughly half the monitor's diagonal:

Monitor One camera, full screen Each camera in quad view (approx.)
5" 5" about 2.5"
7" 7" about 3.5"
10" 10" about 5"

That is simple geometry, not a Visionworks figure, and the exact layout varies by view mode. It still shows the trade-off. A 10" monitor in quad view gives each camera about the same picture as a 5" monitor showing one camera full screen. If you plan on side marker cameras on both sides plus a rear camera, the 7" or 10" is the one to buy. For a single backup camera that you only watch while reversing, the 5" does the job.

Step 2: decide where the monitor will sit

The kits come with more than one way to mount the monitor. Visionworks lists a suction cup, a ram-style mount and its cup holder mount in the Gen2 kits, and a suction cup and cup holder mount with the magnet-camera systems. A few things to know:

  • Cup holder mount: the VWCUPHM locks into most cup holders and keeps the monitor out of your view through the windshield. Visionworks lists it for the 5" and 7" monitors. If a cup holder is your plan, choose one of those sizes, or ask us before you order the 10".
  • No cup holder in the cab? The VWMCUP is a cup holder with a 65 lb magnet base. It gives the cup holder mount somewhere to sit in an older truck or tractor.
  • Windshield mounting: the suction cup mounts are sized to the monitor. The VWSCB-02 fits 5" monitors and the VWSCB-01 fits 7" monitors. Both have a height adjustment.

Measure the space you have before you buy. In a pickup with a busy dash, a 5" or 7" in the cup holder is often the cleanest fit. On a motorhome dash or the wide windshield of a big truck, a 10" may suit you better.

Step 3: pick the kit type, then the size

Size is only half the decision. The other half is how the camera gets mounted and powered at the back of the trailer:

Upgrading or adding a screen later

Visionworks sells each monitor on its own: the 5", 7" and 10" touchscreen quad-view monitors. Each one watches and records up to four Visionworks HD wireless cameras and has an SD card slot (up to 256GB, card not included). Starting with a 5" kit and moving to a larger screen later is a real option. Add cameras first, and if quad view feels cramped, swap the monitor. Want to run two monitors from the same cameras? Ask us first. Visionworks doesn't spell out that setup on its product pages, so we won't promise it here.

When you add cameras, stay in the HD wireless line (part numbers ending in -HDWL). Visionworks says its long-range VWCAMAIO1-HDWL camera doesn't work with its MACH2 systems or any non-HD monitor. Our guide to adding side marker, license plate and dash cameras covers which camera goes where.

FAQ

Is the camera in the 5" kit the same as in the 10" kit?

Yes. All three Gen2 RV kits use the 1080p Gen2 camera, with the same range, night vision and 3-year camera warranty. Only the monitor size changes.

Does the kit come with an SD card?

No. The built-in DVR takes an SD card of up to 256GB, and you supply it.

Can the monitor record while I drive?

Yes. Visionworks says the system can record while you drive, or double as a security system when parked.

Which size is easiest to read with four cameras?

The 10". In quad view each camera gets about a 5" picture, against about 3.5" on the 7" and 2.5" on the 5".
